
Button Up the Envelope: Fall WRB & Roof Underlayment Prep for Middle TN
Why fall moisture management matters here
Middle Tennessee sits in a mixed-humid climate. Walls and roofs see bulk rain from storms, wind-driven rain at openings and eaves, and humidity that slows drying when assemblies get wet. NWS Nashville normals show an annual total near 50.5 inches, with meaningful rain still arriving in October, November, and December—months when many reroofs, additions, and siding change-outs are still open on the schedule.
Nashville’s climate normals already put roughly 15 inches of rain on the books from September through December. Local reporting tied to NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center has pointed to a strengthening El Niño pattern that raises the odds of a wetter-than-average October–December across the Midstate.
Seasonal outlooks do not guarantee every week will be wet. They do shift the odds. When CPC-linked local forecasts lean wetter for late fall, the cost of leaving housewrap incomplete, seams untaped, or roof decking covered only with temporary plastic goes up. Water that gets behind cladding or under shingles does not need a catastrophic storm to cause callbacks; repeated ordinary rain events are enough.

Exterior walls need a weather-resistant envelope that includes a water-resistive barrier behind the cladding and a way for water that gets past the siding to drain out. Felt or another approved WRB must cover studs or sheathing, run continuously to the tops of walls, and terminate correctly at penetrations. - Protect valleys, step-flashing transitions, and roof penetrations even when a full-deck membrane is not in the scope.

- Keep drip edge, kickout flashing, and sidewall step flashing in the same conversation as underlayment; membrane cannot fix a missing kickout.
